Been a while since I bookblogged here, huh? This isn't EVERYTHING, but this post already took me fucking hours to type up, so, let's get into it—

Jhereg by Steven Brust
Mickey7 by Ashton Edward

Both of these books were romps, though the former is the more compelling overall package.

Jhereg )

Mickey7 )

That All Shall Be Saved: Heaven, Hell, and Universal Salvation by David Bentley Hart (DNF, 48%)
Honest to God by John A.T. Robinson (DNF, 54%)
Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thích Nhất Hạnh (DNF, 24%)
Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church by N.T. Wright

Look, to tip my hand, I'm in the (very!) early phase of writing a weird fantasy/historical/pastiche-y novel that dares to ask questions like "damn what was it like to be The Greatest Haterliest Poaster Of All Time" and also "what if Martin Luther was a chick" and "what if Martin Luther was two people instead of one" and "what if those people kissed failed to kiss" and "what if Martin Luther were a radical pacifist on top of all the other crazy shit he was doing" and "what if sacred music was actually efficacious and had geopolitical implications" and so on. I blame Lyndal Roper specifically for presenting a portrait of Martin Luther so vivid and intriguing that I could not help but go patently insane over him thereafter.

The logical next step for researching such a novel would be to read up on the theology and history of that period, because even if I'm VERY heavy on the pastiche aspects, it's nice to understand the historical context and some contemporaneous sources/writings for the period of history I'm interested in, if only for riffing purposes, yaknow.

Alas, however, I'm a magpie with no self-control, and thus easily beguiled by Every Other Book I Trip Over On The Way To The Stuff I Should Actually Be Reading, which is how I wound up with this grab-bag of rather more contemporary theology.

All of which I am entirely unqualified to properly evaluate, to be clear, as someone who's variously identified as "Southern Baptist," "Christian agnostic," "deist," "Quaker," "neopagan," "animist," and "some weird woo bullshit syncretic thing ig, sorry it's cringe I know" at various points in my life. But that sure won't stop me from prattling about 'em on my blog.

That All Shall Be Saved )

Honest to God )

Living Buddha, Living Christ )

Surprised By Hope )

Aside: all of these books felt pretty repetitive. Something to do with the genre, I guess? No way to theology-y people to feel like they've gotten your point across without restating it three different ways? IDK.

ANYWAY. I should probably quit dicking around with these books for a bit, since, y'know, novel. I gotta read more Martin Luther himself and also probably some John Calvin. (Alas this means my copy of Kosuke Koyama's Five Mile an Hour God will likely remain mostly-unread on my shelf. Did I mention I'm a magpie. Books pile up in my home whenever I get on a weird pseudo-reasearch-y kick, and I am blessed with an indulgent partner who just keeps buying me more bookshelves instead of telling me to cut it the hell out, which is very sweet of him, but also I could really use someone to stop me before I commit more Irresponsible Spending Crimes... though I saw someone the other day comparing book-buying to wine-buying, e.g. hey it's valid and normal to let some of them age in the cellar & have more than you'll be able to drink; you want to have good wine when the time is right! and UNFORTUNATELY this is very effective for allowing me to continue in my profligate ways. RIP me.)

...okay yeah I couldn't find any way to fit Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik into all of this. Spinning Silver was very good, but I don't have much to say! The primary romance was a total nothingburger, but that's fine because mostly the book is about Miryem girlbossing her way through Rumpelstiltskin and that shit totally rules. I would like to read several more books about moneylenders Being Incredibly Good At Their Job. The book gets a bit bloated and flabbier as it goes along (though the parts with secondary-girlboss Irina and horrible little man Mirnatius can stay; those bits were great) but never enough to knock it down from the "very good" tier. Fairytale retellings aren't normally my thing but this one was solid.

YOU GUYS, I had not one but TWO training sessions today end up being 15 minutes or less because the clients realized they weren't actually ready to ask questions, they needed to work through stuff on their own first.

TWO of them!

This week has been a monster at work, and I'm taking the whole day off tomorrow, so it was delightful to have over 90 minutes back to work on other tasks so I could walk away without feeling scrambled. Especially since Monday is going to be a doozy of a day with meetings from 9 or 10 a.m. until the end of the day. (Including, guess what, TWO MORE TRAINING SESSIONS. My colleague who also does these sessions is on vacation this week and next, and apparently that's when all the clients decided they wanted training. All.of.them.)

I'm now going to go stare blankly at a wall for a while, instead of a computer screen. Wheeeeee.

Cloudward, Ho! is the newest Dimension 20 campaign of actual-play D&D with its classic cast of comedy improvisers. This one is an aeronautical adventure set in a steampunk universe, about a motley crew who set out on a quest in search of a lost continent and the expedition that disappeared before them. The first episode just came out yesterday, and I really enjoyed it!

Some Notes About the Premise (Moderate Spoilers) )
I'm looking forward to seeing where the campaign goes from here! Anyone else watching or planning to watch?

Using my TV Show PTW boardgame.

Last time I completed 7/10 of the ones on my list. I was much more in a cartoon mood so when all that was left was not that I lost steam and ultimately made the choice to move on.

Avatar: Stranger Things (move two extra tiles one time, only works on trap tile if I roll even)

Roll #1

Ironic I got Stranger Things as my avatar when that's one of the shows I couldn't watch last time. 😅

I rolled and got an 8, but I see that's the PTW and I don't want that sooo using my skill already to make it 10. Prompt: mostly blue cover. I can't tell if the cover is blue or blueish green but whatever, Danny Phantom it is! I'll probably end up rewatching because I didn't mark in my trakt anything but episode 1...

Roll #2

A 9, prompt: weapon on the cover. Helluva Boss!!

Roll #3

FML a 2 and that's the PTW square again I knew this was going to happen I just knew it. Ended up going through my list and removing a few movies that should've been on my letterboxd and putting the sort setting on random. Generated a 21 and that's Invader Zim! I would've been about 13 when it came out, I wasn't watching much TV then as I got my first PC. I'm excited to see a piece of culture I missed out on!

Roll #4

A 1?? Whatever man... Prompt: fantasy creatures. Took me a minute but I picked out She-ra, It's been way too long since I watched it, by this point I generally know what happens.

Roll #5

A 2......prompt: favorite genre. Fantasy and I'm shoeing in Ninjago to make sure it gets in there.

Roll #6

An 8, prompt: weapon on the cover again. Miraculous Ladybug!

Roll #7

A 7 and the end. The reward could be either Cybersix or Dark... You know what, I need guaranteed happiness and that's Cybersix.

Where to watch:
Danny Phantom
Helluva Boss
Invader Zim
She-ra
Ninjago
Miraculous Ladybug
Cybersix

TV Show PTW List:

[Animation/Superhero] Danny Phantom
[Animation/Supernatural] Helluva Boss
[Animation/Sci-Fi] Invader Zim
[Animation/Fantasy] She-ra
[Animation/Superhero] Ninjago
[Animation/Superhero] Miraculous Ladybug

Denise and I have a long-standing tradition in celebrating romantic holidays: Do an art project! It's only very occasionally clay; much more often, we do something in the paper or book arts genre. So it was this time.

Last Sunday was our 34th anniversary, so we made marbled paper.

We'd tried marbling before with a quick-and-dirty kit that turned out not to work at all well--used a spirit based paint that only worked on very small surfaces, otherwise the solvent evaporated off too fast. It was also nasty and plasticky, really only suited for dipping bottles and knick-knacks. So this time, we got a proper kit, with paints, carageenan gum, alum for mordanting. I prepped eight sheets of drawing paper a few days in advance, dipping them in alum solution, hanging to dry, then putting them in the press to flatten. Saturday night, I mixed up a half gallon of the carageenan size in my stand mixer, left it overnight to settle. Sunday after lunch, I set up the work table, filled up the thrift-store cake pan, and we made a splash!

To make your paper, you drip successive colors onto the surface of the size, then manipulate them with a skewer, brush or some sort of rake--I made one from nails in a length of 1x2" wood. Then you float the mordanted paper on the top to pick up the colors, set it aside to dry. Like so:

We each did four sheets, suitable for book covers or end papers. Here are some more of the results.

They're all dry and back in the press again. And we celebrated with supper at Beppi & Giannis.

Alya's new haircut is cute.

Marinette continuing to put Adrien on a pedestal. She was so busy paying attention to the happy couple behind her that she slapped Adrien and stuck her fingers up his nose when he tried to kiss her, good lord.

Why did Alya/Nino run off to detransform when they transformed in front of everyone already?

Sometimes I feel like the new style is lovely and other times it just looks plain weird. The old style wasn't perfect either though.

I know this is being done on purpose to later show growth but it's so annoying. I'm too old to watch teens fumble around for too long at a time. 😅

Alya's voice seems more mature too, I like it.

"I don't know how to act like a loving couple" girl you grew up with one, your parents. She could've gone to them for help.

Marinette's lucky Lila didn't follow her when she went to transform;;

Camp Cretaceous 5x02

First I rewatched 5x01 where Kenji is reunited with his dad, everyone is worried he's evil, he convinces them he's not aaand at the end he blackmails Mae with the kids into helping him and Cash with his new plan.

I love how sweet Sammy and Yaz are with Kenji and helping him get ready. :') So hard watching his insecurity towards his dad knowing his dad is evil. 😓

Who are the people Darius' brother is getting help from??

I want to watch more now but I have other things to watch ahhh.

Ninjago 5x02

First rewatched episode 1. I was able to watch it on tubi here! Wu is opening a tea shop, the ninjas are still doing odd jobs, Lloyd misses his father. He's grown so much! Buut then he's possessed by Wu's former student Morro and the guys can't use their powers. Kai doesn't want to leave Lloyd but has no choice. They're all upset about having to fight and then leave their friend. I enjoyed the bits of humor and friendship/family in this episode, can't believe it took me this long to watch this show again.

Okay on to two, the fallout...

Wu gave up the scroll after copying its contents to save them all, the ninja go after Ronin who stole something Morro needs, and Wu+Misako reveal to Nya that she and Kai's mother was the water ninja and she needs to train in water to defeat Morro. They ultimately need to find Wu's father's burial place.

Cybersix E01

I was not expecting to be hit with such a lovely opening song! And the ending too. That was quite enjoyable. :D I watched it here on YouTube btw. I look forward to watching more!

Pretty sure I forgot to mark some episodes watched on trakt but rewatching is fun!

2x15: The young Eda/Raine episode. I love their instant connection, and Raine came just in time because Eda's sister got so wrapped up in studying she grew apart from Eda.

2x16:
The one where Luz and Hunter end up in Belos' mindscape, Luz finds out Belos=Phillip and Hunter finds out the truth about himself right before getting sucked into a hole. Hunter is so frickin' tragic.

2x17:
Wow how far behind is my trakt?? I definitely remember at least a few episodes ahead of these events. It's the one where King gets the letter from 'his warrior family' and he and Luz go investigate. Eda crying over Luz and King being in danger. :'<

2x18: Badass Augustus episode. He saved the students from getting permanent sigils. Amity realizes Willow has changed. They did a very Sailor Moon like pose!

Aww they're so sweet. 😭❤️️

2x19: Poor King, from one disappointment to the next. Omg who draw those wanted posters, I love them.

Tubedemon!!

The bike guy Steve bawling at the two little old ladies in love. 😭

Oh, so Steve is Matt's brother.

2x20: Awwww the kiss episode. <3

2x21:

babiesss 😭

Aw Hunter blushed when Willow caught him. 😊

I definitely had not seen this episode. 😭😭😭

I'm sad there's only three episodes left since the show got cut off, but they're longer so that's something. I think I will stop here for now...as much as I hate to at that cliffhanger. x_x

Okay I started the quest where the group talks about the next location, then the POV switches to...Sunday!! I guess Jade let him go?? "Go now. You are free - O chosen one, who dared to exceed his bounds. Sever your wings, descend to the mortal realm, and walk their lands. See what this world is truly like."

So he's just been wandering around Penacony with this Wonweek and using Harmony so no one recognizes him.

Sunday's wings and hair are so fluffy I want to touch...

Wonweek, Workday...

Six year old Sunday tried to fly with his ear feathers. :')

I just realized he's not wearing his halo. *blink*

Was no one told that Jade freed Sunday?? Maybe it's purely about the fact that he came back to Penacony.

Why is no one concerned that Phantylia may have done something to Tingyun besides taking her place?? And Wonweek's reaction shouldn't have been dismissed, nor Tingyun's appearance change. I love her new look though, she's a really lovely character looks-wise.

So through a lot of work, Ruan Mei brought Tingyun back by giving her the choice to live even though she'll have Phantylia's scars on/in her forever. Wonweek probably saw the Destruction/Phantylia's mark when he tuned her. Ruan Mei is both terrifying and inspirational...

Who was the traveling merchant who saved Tingyun by bringing her to Ruan Mei and what did they give her in return??

What exactly happened to Tingyun's tail? I never expected to get this whole storyline for Tingyun. Apparently she was switched with Phantalyia a lot earlier than March thought. She does seem a lot different than the Tingyun we met, but then again this Tingyun's been through so much. I'm feeling quite affectionate towards her right now. :')

Why is so much left out of the translation? For every three sentences spoken there's one small line of text sometimes...

Tingyun and Yukong. 😭

I'm surprised the Harmony worked against Robin.

So Sunday severed his halo. 😭 At least he didn't cut off his wings. *shudder* I understand his reasoning for doing it though.

Sunday doesn't like frivolous people...I guess he wouldn't get along well one on one with March or even Caelus/Stelle depending on how you play them;;

The Harmonious Choir fight was too hard, I had to lower the difficulty (really grateful we can do that). Sunday got his halo back! And he joined the Astral Express! I thought I saw something about that in fandom but thought maybe it was a fanon thing or a spoiler so I avoided looking too close. Good to know it's true!

Looks like something is going on with Herta, wonder if we need to go to the Space Station before Amorpheus.

Why, who makes much of a miracle?
As to me I know of nothing else but miracles,
Whether I walk the streets of Manhattan,
Or dart my sight over the roofs of houses toward the sky,
Or wade with naked feet along the beach just in the edge of the water,
Or stand under trees in the woods,
Or talk by day with any one I love, or sleep in the bed at night with any one I love,
Or sit at table at dinner with the rest,
Or look at strangers opposite me riding in the car,
Or watch honey-bees busy around the hive of a summer forenoon,
Or animals feeding in the fields,
Or birds, or the wonderfulness of insects in the air,
Or the wonderfulness of the sundown, or of stars shining so quiet and bright,
Or the exquisite delicate thin curve of the new moon in spring;
These with the rest, one and all, are to me miracles,
The whole referring, yet each distinct and in its place.

To me every hour of the light and dark is a miracle,
Every cubic inch of space is a miracle,
Every square yard of the surface of the earth is spread with the same,
Every foot of the interior swarms with the same.

To me the sea is a continual miracle,
The fishes that swim—the rocks—the motion of the waves—the
ships with men in them,
What stranger miracles are there?

The Trump–Musk alliance was always a ticking time bomb. Two giant egos colliding in a shared vanity project called DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency). Supposedly designed to slash bureaucracy and save taxpayer money, it quickly turned into a wrecking ball aimed at vital institutions.

Elon Musk, installed as a special government official in early 2025, took the reins with typical bravado. And, as was later revealed, a ketamine habit. Under his leadership, DOGE gutted federal agencies, from air traffic control (leading to a record number of crashes) to USAID, whose budget was slashed by over 80%. That single cut triggered a humanitarian disaster. According to research from Boston University, it caused an estimated 300,000 deaths globally, including over 200,000 children due to halted programs fighting HIV, malaria, and malnutrition.

While Trump's base cheered the claimed "$175 billion in savings", experts pointed out the cuts barely dented the deficit and did massive harm to vulnerable communities. Behind the scenes, even Trump reportedly asked, “Was it all bullshit?

DOGE wasn't just reckless, it was deeply incompetent. Its staff didn't even understand Social Security software, wrongly flagging 19th century birthdates as fraud. It would be funny if the consequences weren't so tragic.

Eventually, the Trump-Musk bromance imploded. Musk quit, started attacking Trump's fiscal policies, and called his budget a "disgusting abomination”. No surprise. It was never a partnership of shared values, just mutual benefit. Once the benefits ran dry, the egos clashed and it fell apart.

Chapter 11 )

Chapter 12 )

The atmosphere of menace is somewhat lighter in these chapters. I did enjoy the description of the bath! And also all the flowers around the border post. Also nice to read about immigration officials who are, while not able to help Christie, also not bullying or unpleasant; of course, being an upper-middle-class white woman in the Middle East of this era probably helps a lot, but it's a bit of a contrast to most of the stories you hear these days - no one even handcuffs Christie and deports her to a random third country! Amazing.

Charles is still being mysterious, but actually I didn't think his letter was too bad - I didn't blame her for being annoyed, but it felt like that was more about the situation than his specific choices. Her dad was also quite reasonable, and entirely willing to validate her annoyance even while he also wanted her to stay put! Something is Up, and I suspect he has guessed more of it than Christie has yet.

But what a frustrating cliffhanger! Tune in next time to find out more, maybe??
